When Does Perimenopause Really Start?

Four best and mature friends

I’m 44, and since I turned 40, weird things have been happening to me. It started with crazy allergies I’d never experienced before—like nonstop sneezing! My hair also became really fine, which has been a bit depressing.

I had no idea that these could be perimenopause symptoms until a friend of mine sent me some information. That’s when I started noticing a whole list of other changes happening to my body.

For example, the huge bloating in my tummy—seriously, it made me look like I was pregnant!

So, when does perimenopause actually start? For me, it felt like it just magically appeared right around age 40. But for many women, perimenopause can start earlier, in the late 30s, or even later, in the early 50s.

Perimenopause is that time when your body begins to transition toward menopause, and it can last anywhere from a few years to over a decade. The important thing is to be aware of the symptoms and know that this is a completely natural process—it doesn’t happen overnight.

The key is to prepare yourself for these changes and find what works best for you. Being informed about perimenopause symptoms helps you stay ahead of the game. Whether it’s irregular periods, mood swings, sleep disturbances, or unexpected bloating, knowing that perimenopause could be at play allows you to take charge and feel more in control during this transition.

Remember, perimenopause is unique to every woman. So, even though it might start differently for each of us, what’s most important is to embrace this phase and take care of yourself during this time of change.
